UIE-AMPERE PhD INTENSIVE COURSE 2026

Logo-Ampere-Europe-orizzontale.jpg

The intensive PhD school will be held from 10 September to 15 September at the premises of the Department of Industrial Engineering. On the evening before the course begins, 9 September, all participants are invited to a welcome pizza!

CONTENTS

  • MICROWAVE HEATING

LECTURERS:

  • Prof. Paolo Veronesi, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia

  • Prof. Luca Perregrini, University of Pavia

The microwave sessions are intended to give the student an overview of microwave assisted processing of materials, ranging from permittivity measurement techniques to transmission lines and impedance matching using the Smith chart and strategies to design industrial microwave applicators. Laboratory activities include hands on session on impedance matching of real microwave applicators and microwave heating of materials in small cavities, addressing the topics of temperature control and monitoring.

  • MULTIPHYSICS NUMERICAL MODELING

LECTURER:

  • Dr. Riccardo Torchio, University of Padova

The Multiphysics numerical modeling session will focus on flash and ultra-high-temperature sintering applications, where the description of electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical aspects is fundamental to the accurate modeling of the phenomenon. The lectures will introduce flash and ultra-high-temperature sintering of ceramic materials from both materials science and numerical modeling perspectives. Laboratory activities will include a visit to the lab to observe a sintering process, as well as hands-on sessions on numerical modeling of the process using COMSOL Multiphysics.

  • OPTIMIZATION

LECTURER:

  • Dr. Francesco Lucchini, University of Padova

The optimization sessions are intended to give the student an overview of optimization methods for the design of electromagnetic devices and related processes, with particular focus on single- and multi-objective parametric and topology optimization. Laboratory activities include hands-on sessions on numerical optimization workflows coupled with simulation, aimed at improving the performance of electromagnetic heating devices.

SCHEDULE

The PhD School will follow the program outlined below. Students will be divided into two groups and will attend one of the following activities:
